Qoph or Qop (In Modern Hebrew: Kuf/Kof, Arabic: Qāf) is the nineteenth letter in many Semitic abjads, including Phoenician, Aramaic, Syriac, Hebrew ק and Arabic alphabet qāf ق (in abjadi order). Its sound value is an emphatic [kˤ] or [q]. The OHED (Oxford Hebrew English Dictionary) gives the letter Qoph a transliteration value of Q or a K and a final transliteration value as a ck. In Hebrew Gematria, it has the numerical value of 100. It became over time the letter Q in the Latin alphabet, and the letter Qoppa in certain early varieties of the Greek alphabet. Q. I'm trying to find out how to translate my friends last name which is French into Hebrew. The name is 'Le Bas' and the S is silent... so would I use a Samek, or leave it empty? Also, if their first name is Marc with a 'C' would I use a Kaph, or Qoph. Thanks. You would not indicate a silent letter from another language, as Hebrew is written phonetically. For instance, the Hebrew version of Alexandre Dumas does not end in a samekh either. "Mark" here would end in a Qoph, because the Kaph becomes a fricative ("kh") sound at the end of a word, so his name would be read mistakenly as "Marakh" or some such. There are a few ways to write foreign names, but this would be the most likely, I'd say: mrq lbh There are a couple alephs thrown in to aid in pronunciation and to indicate foreignness, otherwise it would basically look like the Hebrew words for "soup" and "her heart."
