From Late Latin Abraham < Ancient Greek Ἀβραάμ (Abraam) < Hebrew אַבְרָהָם (avrahám, “Abraham”). Glossed as אַב (av, “father of”) + הֲמוֹן (hamón, “multitude of”) in Genesis 17:4–5; or from Hebrew אַבְרָם (avrám, “Abram”).
