A kibbutz (Hebrew: קיבוץ, קִבּוּץ, lit. "gathering, clustering"; plural kibbutzim) is a collective community in Israel that was traditionally based on agriculture. Today, farming has been partly supplanted by other economic branches, including industrial plants and high-tech enterprises. Kibbutzim began as utopian communities, a combination of socialism and Zionism. Over the last decades, most Kibbutzim have been privatized and no longer practice communal living. Less than five percent of Israelis live on kibbutzim. A member of a Kibbutz is called a Kibbutznik (Hebrew: ×§Ö´×‘Ö¼×•Ö¼×¦Ö°× Ö´×™×§â€Ž). HistoryFrom Wikipedia under the

Q. Where was it established and what was it called? Asked by Kosher Cupcake - Sat Aug 18 14:40:56 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. The first kibbutz was "Kvutzat Degania", founded in 1909 by Yosef Baratz on the southern shore of the Sea of Galilee. This later became Kibbutz Degania "Aleph" as distinguished from its adjoining sister Kibbutz Degania "Bet". Both these kibbutzim are still thriving communities.
