Israel (Hebrew: יִשְׂרָאֵל, Yisra'el; Arabic: إِسْرَائِيلُ, Isrā'īl) officially the State of Israel (Hebrew: מְדִינַת יִשְׂרָאֵל (help·info), Medinat Yisra'el; Arabic: دَوْلَةُ إِسْرَائِيلَ, Dawlat Isrā'īl), is a developed country in Western Asia located on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. It borders Lebanon in the north, Syria in the northeast, Jordan in the east, and Egypt on the southwest, and contains geographically diverse features within its relatively small area. Also adjacent are the West Bank to the east and Gaza Strip to the southwest. Israel is the world's only predominantly Jewish state with a population of about 7.5 million people, of whom approximately 5.62 million are Jewish. The largest ethnic minority group is the segment denominated as Arab citizens of Israel, while minority religious groups include Muslims, Christians, Druze, Samaritans and others, most of which are found within the Arab segment. The modern state of Israel has its historical and religious roots in the Biblical Land of Israel (Eretz Yisrael), a concept central to Judaism since ancient times, and the heartland of the ancient kingdoms of Israel and Judah. Following the birth of political Zionism in 1897 and the Balfour Declaration, the League of Nations granted the United Kingdom the British Mandate of Palestine after World War I, with responsibility for establishing "...such political, administrative and economic conditions as will secure the establishment of the Jewish national home, as laid down in the preamble, and the development of self-governing institutions, and also for safeguarding the civil and religious rights of all the inhabitants of Palestine, irrespective of race and religion..." In November 1947 the United Nations decided on partition of Palestine into a Jewish state, an Arab state, and a UN-administered Jerusalem. Partition was accepted by Zionist leaders but rejected by Arab leaders leading to the 1947–1948 Civil War in Mandatory Palestine. Israel declared independence on 14 May 1948 and neighboring Arab states attacked the next day. Since then, Israel has fought a series of wars with neighboring Arab states, and in consequence, Israel controls territories beyond those delineated in the 1949 Armistice Agreements. Some international borders remain in dispute, however Israel has signed peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan, though efforts to resolve conflict with the Palestinians have so far only met with limited success. Israel is a representative democracy with a parliamentary system and universal suffrage. The Prime Minister serves as head of government and the Knesset serves as Israel's legislative body. The economy, based on the nominal gross domestic product, is the 44th-largest in the world. Israel ranks highest among Middle Eastern countries on the UN human development index and economic competitiveness. Jerusalem is the country's capital, seat of government, and largest city, while Israel's main financial center is Tel Aviv. From Wikipedia under the

You seem to know so please tell. Asked by afk - Wed Aug 9 13:05:21 2006 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. It's a long, long story but first a very quick overview... Israel occupies land which for centuries was Palestinian land and the Palestinians and surrounding countries want it returned. They don't like Israel because it's on 'their' land and because Israel is Jewish and westernised. In the past Israel has occupied land from the surrounding countries that was not deemed part of Israel when it was created by UN resolution in 1948, this has heightened hostility towards Israel from it s neighbours. Israel has been targeted by suicide bombers and attacks from terrorist organisations such as Hamas and Hezbollah, against which it retaliates using it's powerful military to destroy terrorist strongholds. This it claims is done in self-defence… [cont.] Answered by Trevor - Wed Aug 9 18:00:28 2006 Does Israel take permission from anyone prior to develop any of it s infrastructure and military installation? Q. Similarly why Iran or anyone for that matter have to obtain permission from Israel before doing anything? Isn t it a sign of very arrogance? Asked by Komola - Sun Jul 26 07:59:29 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. Nope. It is clear that they don't. They do discuss plans with allies when military action is necessary. I don't see where Iran is seeking permissions from Israel for anything. They might want to to prevent an attack from Israel in lieu of the statements Iran has made about wanting their total destruction. I think Israel would kick their azz in a fight, but that is uneducated opinion. I don't think your perception of this situation is correct. ~ Answered by Kekionga - Sun Jul 26 08:20:15 2009 How many rockets has Hamas fired into Israel during the last three weeks?
Q. They are all torqued up about Israel hitting back, and I just wonder what it will take for the Palestinians to boot Hamas. Asked by Fred - Mon Dec 29 19:20:33 2008 - - 12 Answers - 2 Comments A. As convoluted as that may sound, the statistics bear out the reality of the truce. From the beginning of the year until June 19, Israel was struck by 2,660 projectiles fired from Gaza. From June 19, when the tahdiya went into effect, to Nov. 4, the total was 65. But on Nov. 5 a new round of "negotiations" with weapons began when Israel struck what it said were militants tunneling under the Gaza fence. Hamas responded with a barrage of rocket fire that has continued for most of the past month. From Nov. 5 to Dec. 10, 237 mortar shells and rockets have been fired from Gaza at towns in southern Israel, prompting Israeli leaders to call for a tough military response. Also, since Dec. 10, there have been several dozens of rockets a day, so… [cont.] Answered by darkAI - Mon Dec 29 19:31:00 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Israel"
