Surat Al-ma'un Information

Sūrat al-Māʿūn (Arabic: سورة الماعون‎) (Small Kindnesses, Almsgiving, Have You Seen) is the 107th sura of the Qur'an with 7 ayat.

This Surah was revealed in Madina where a myriad of factions were conspiring to contain the growing Islamic influence. The Surah discusses the character of those who claim to be Muslims but are oblivious of the hereafter. These people deprive the orphans of their rights, are heedless to the dues of the destitute, and pray without holding God in remembrance, forgetting the objective behind prayer. Their charitable acts are a display of their false piety, since they do not give for the love of God.

Arabic Text

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيمِِ Bismi Allahi alrrahmani alrraheemi

(107:1) أَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي يُكَذِّبُ بِالدِّينِ Araayta allathee yukaththibu bialddeeni

Did you see (O Muhammad) the one who rejects faith ? (107:2) فَذَلِكَ الَّذِي يَدُعُّ الْيَتِيمَ Fathalika allathee yaduAAAAu alyateema

It is indeed the same one who repells the orphan, (107:3) (mistake) وَلا يَحُضُّ عَلَى طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِين Wala yahuddu AAala taAAami almiskeeni

And it is the same one who does not call to feed the needy. (107:4) فَوَيْلٌ لِلْمُصَلِّينَ Fawaylun lilmusalleena

So, woe unto the upholders of the prayers (107:5) الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنْ صَلاتِهِمْ سَاهُونَ Allatheena hum AAan salatihim sahoona

Who are forgetful of their prayers; (107:6) الَّذِينَ هُمْ يُرَاءُونَ Allatheena hum yuraoona

Who show-off (that they are in prayers) (107:7) وَيَمْنَعُونَ الْمَاعُونَ WayamnaAAoona almaAAoona

Who refuse to give out the smallest of help (in kindnesses)!
